FRA Report: Places of Care = Places of Safety?

The Fundamental Rights Agency Report “Places of Care = Places of Safety?” takes a critical look at our conceptions & misconceptions of impairment & disabilities, their impact on how the public at large perceives both persons with disabilities & care. It draws out the very broad understanding of “violence” necessary to understand the amount of injustice done to many persons with disabilities in too many care institutions. Obviously, it also dissects the dedication as well as the complete overwhelm of staff & how resource shortages erode safety in places of care. It was a particular pleasure to support the team drafting the report. Although familiar with many of the patterns, it was nevertheless shocking to read the first hand accounts. The quality & sheer quantity of those accounts make the report recommended & necessary reading.
