equal but separate: the opening of the para-olympics
Today the Para-Olympics start. While the participation of persons with disabilities in mainstream sport is now a recognized human right, societies are only starting to approach the starting line on equality.
Somehow, the Para-Olympics seem like a twist on the notion of “separate but equal”, which is a prevailing description of racial segregation. Equal but separate appears a fitting description. The NYTimes reports on athletes adding equality as one of their goals.
